The vast Southern Ocean cannot be explored and observed by science alone. TRICUSO will work with a wider community of highly motivated groups and individuals eager to host scientific instruments onboard their vessels during planned expeditions (leisure or industry) around the Southern Ocean, enabling the opportunity to test new technologies and methods that will ultimately yield more high-quality data, contributing to a deeper understanding of the Ocean Carbon Sink.
Citizens all over the world are getting involved in research efforts through a host of platforms and programmes across many domains of the science spectrum, making valuable contributions towards generating new knowledge and success stories. In the area of marine science, citizen inclusion in projects and initiatives is increasing awareness of the challenges the ocean is facing and is increasing Ocean Literacy.
TRICUSO’s aim to strengthen the Southern Ocean observation value chain is built around the involvement of citizen science, particularly in our partnership with International Monoclass Open Class Association (IMOCA) to innovate new sensors systems that can be fitted on racing yachts participating in the Ocean Race, an around-the-world event. This is an exciting opportunity for science and ocean leisure users to join forces and contribute toward knowledge that will help us better understand our changing climate. Stay tuned for updates on how you can follow the racing yachts carrying TRICUSO instruments when the project trial begins within the Ocean Race starting in January 2027.

TRICUSO will collaborate with the Ships of Opportunity Platform (SOOP) programme and private sector organisations to explore opportunities to trial instruments and methods onboard commercial vessels and cruise liners sailing in the Southern Ocean. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) promotes practice of safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic region. We will collaborate with IAATO to explore the opportunity of fitting a cruise ship with instruments on a pilot mission to further determine how cruise liners in this region can be used in observation efforts.
Are you an individual or representative of a group sailing in the Southern Ocean and interested in learning how your trajectory could contribute to important scientific research? We’d love to hear from you. Please contact us: hello@tricuso.eu
