The Ocean Race – Round the World 2027 requires that all participating yachts be equipped with scientific instruments. Read about the team that will take the TRICUSO instrument: DMG MORI.

On 15th of September 2026, the TRICUSO team met with sailors and technical teams of IMOCA yachts to get up close and personal with the OceanPack™ RACE in Lorient, France, at our partner IMOCA’s headquarters.

This interactive workshop enabled time for hands-on training to ensure the system is working optimally so the teams can focus on winning the race while the instrument is measuring in the background. It also provides an opportunity to discuss possible improvements based on various perspectives of sailors, technicians and scientists.

“For the teams racing in yachts equipped with the instrument, it is important that they have the most up-to-date information on how to run the systems properly. This is crucial for data quality. They also need to understand what metadata to record, and how to properly install and maintain the system”, Lucie Knor remarked about the significance of the workshop. Along with team members Toste Tanhua and Kristen Kampen, Lucie was joined by Stefan Raimund of the Ocean Race and IMOCA partners Domitille Hauwen and Eline Brazidec and team members from several racing teams who will be participating in the Ocean Race next year.

The event demonstrated the success of this evolving partnership between science, industry, professional sports and citizens.

TRICUSO’s goal of expanding the capacity for ocean observation in the Southern Ocean is supported by citizen science platforms, such as the IMOCA racing yachts, which travel through the under-observed regions of the ocean.
