We are pleased to announce that the DMG MORI sailing team and its stunning new IMOCA class will be joining our quest to collect much-needed data in the Southern Ocean by hosting TRICUSO’s innovated SubCtech OceanPack™ RACE during the Ocean Race – Round the World 2027.
Powered by the wind and the deft skill of the team, racing yachts make for an excellent citizen science platform to collect CO2 measurements in under-observed regions of the Ocean where few maritime ships travel.
Where weight and space are limited and each centimetre and gram is a precious commodity, making room for instruments onboard is a commitment to scientific research that will help us better understand the ocean and climate change. To level the playing field, the Ocean Race now requires that all yachts participating in the Round the World event must be equipped with instruments.
In a labour of love for the ocean, sailors are embracing this challenge, enthusiastically learning how to maintain the system and ensure it’s working properly during the race, most often while they are being tossed around in strong waves at high speed.

About the SubCtech OceanPack™ RACE
- Developed by TRICUSO partner SubCtech, the OceanPack is a compact pCO2 system designed to collect measurements in rough, sailing conditions. It continuously measures CO2 and companion parameters: including water temperature, salinity and cell temperature — straight from the flowing seawater.
- As part of the TRICUSO project, the team at partner GEOMAR has been working toward improving the quality of data the system returns through long-term trials in in situ conditions; the instrument will be further tested during the 2027 Ocean Race – Round the World onboard the DMG MORI Global One.

One of the key strands of TRICUSO’s objective to strengthen the Southern Ocean observation value chain is built around the involvement of ships of opportunity, such as racing yachts. The collaboration with IMOCA, SubCtech, the Ocean Race and DMG MORI demonstrates the success of this evolving partnership between science, industry, professional sports and citizens.
