TRICUSO at Ocean Sciences Meeting 2026

The TRICUSO project and members of its consortium made a healthy splash in the heavily populated waters of OSM26. Held in Glasgow, Scotland, this was the first time the prestigious conference took place outside the United States, and it was a welcome setting for two town halls, a co-chaired session titled The Southern Ocean Carbon Sink: processes, observations, and change and a poster talk.

SOCONET’s Town Hall at the Ocean Sciences Meeting

Monitoring air-sea carbon interactions is critical for integration of ocean data into global policy. Accurate monitoring requires high-quality, continuous measurements to observe and predict a variety of impacts on the marine environment and human wellbeing. The increased level of demand being placed on the surface carbon observing community has led to transforming a loose affiliation of observing platforms into a formal network within GOOS capable of integrating global activities and providing high quality measurements needed. A uniquely designed and distributed Surface Ocean CO₂ Observing Network (SOCONET) will deliver critical information to UNFCCC assessments, Global Greenhouse Gas Watch, State of the Climate Report and other management and policy making bodies and processes. The SOCONET’s Town Hall at the Ocean Sciences Meeting, which will take place on 23 February 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, will be a forum for community feedback on the network and to present progress on data, and short-term plans, moderated by TRICUSO colleague Maciej Telszewski. This interactive Town Hall aims to bring together current and prospective contributors to SOCONET, as well as data users and stakeholders to: Learn about SOCONET’s motivations, accomplishments to date and ambition, Learn about recent developments regarding SOCONET’s governing structures, data quality requirements and real time monitoring plans, Provide feedback on main elements of the SOCONET Implementation Plan due at the end of 2026, Meet some of the Team and discuss how SOCONET can help you! SOCONET SC Meeting

Since SOCONET was approved as the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Emerging Network in mid 2024, the team at IO-PAN, led by Maciej Telszewski, has established SOCONET’s Steering Committee (SC), developed its Terms of Reference (ToR) which will guide the development of the network towards full maturity, nominated and approved two co-chairs and organised the first SOCONET SC meeting, which will take place in Bergen, 2026, on the heels of TRICUSO’s first Annual Meeting.
