Sophie Clayton

Principal Investigator in Marine Biogeochemistry

WP6 | NOC

Dr Sophie Clayton’s research is broadly focused on better understanding how dynamic physical features in the ocean, like eddies and fronts, interact with chemical and biological processes to shape phytoplankton communities and modulate vertical and lateral carbon fluxes. She collects data in the field and works with numerical models to further our understanding of how ocean physical circulation and ecological processes interact to shape patterns of phytoplankton biodiversity. She is active in leading international working groups to develop best practices for biogeochemical sensors and phytoplankton imaging instruments, and to collaborate with engineers to develop new sampling systems to support the expansion of routine biological sampling at sea. For TRICUSO, in collaboration with EMBRC and NORCE, she will organise and lead three to four workshops to scope out and implement Bio-GO-SHIP activities in Europe. She will also lead a European Bio-GO-SHIP demonstration mission on an upcoming GO-SHIP cruise.
